Bakubung Agricultural Project
As part of its SLP commitments Wesizwe is developing commercial agricultural farming at its property - Zwartkoppies farm. The mine provides funding for infrastructure development and training requirements in the establishment of the agricultural project.
A Wesizwe-commissioned Feasibility Study was completed in June 2013 which recommended both livestock and crop farming activities. The implementations plans for the projects were finalised in January 2014, with project steering committee established in early February 2014. The project steering committee is comprised of the provincial department of Agriculture, local municipalities of Rustenburg and Moses Kotane, farmers’ representative and project implementing agents, and will also assist with the selection of beneficiaries for the crop production project. The beneficiaries of the projects will establish a cooperative as part of their project engagement.
The provincial department of Agriculture, the local municipalities of Rustenburg and Moses Kotane and the farmers’ representative continue to support the project through the established project steering committee. Attendance of monthly project meetings by government is minimal however project updates are circulated to all committee members on a regular basis.
