A year in review from the CEO’s Desk
01 December 2012
So far, all the surface civils and earthworks have been completed and all our structural construction work is on target with the ventilation shaft and the main shaft winder-houses erected on time. The main shaft sinking started ahead of schedule in September and is on target, with the ventilation shaft now at 89m depth and the main shaft at 32m depth. To date, we have achieved over 165,000 fatality-free shifts since the project started in June 2011. We now have around 1000 people on site, mostly working for our contractors. This is all good news for the project and bodes well for an excellent start to the new year ahead. The local community and its residents are also seeing the tangible benefits of the Bakubung Platinum Mine project. It is providing a steady source of muchneeded employment to local people and so far, around 30% of the local workforce at the site is coming from the local community. Wesizwe has also been heavily involved in supporting a large number of sustainability projects as part of its SLP commitments for the year, all of which have benefited the Ledig community directly.
For example, we have been delivering precious water supplies by refilling community water tanks daily; a total of 8 schools have been refurbished for local learners in the area; we have successfully run a reading and writing skills programme for local young students; and we have purchased a local farm to accommodate local cattle grazing and agricultural projects that will benefit the community.
We have also started to see the benefits of many of our training and development programmes for the local community being rewarded with successful graduates and learners going into the workplace, newly qualified and experienced. Other exciting SLP projects are planned for the new year.
2013 represents a whole new set of challenges for Wesizwe and for the platinum mining industry as a whole, and to help us to achieve our goals during this important new year, we are pleased to welcome a number of new executives to our company. We have just appointed a new Chief Operating Officer, a new Company Secretary, a new General Manager Mining, and a new SHE Manager, all of whom will be starting in the new year. Our Board of Directors is united in its approach and very supportive, providing the necessary leadership to take our company forward into a new and exciting era.
Wesizwe understands and appreciates that creating a really great company requires the commitment, talents and energy of each and every member of the team, working together towards achieving one key goal. We also acknowledge that we could not have achieved all our key milestones this year without the support and hard work of our people. Last month, we launched our Wesizwe Achievement Awards, a recognition and rewards initiative to celebrate the incredible people who go beyond the call of duty for our company and help us to make things happen.
We look forward to working with our team and with all our various stakeholder groups over the year ahead to meet the many challenges that await us and thank everyone for their support over the past year.
At the end of January, Wesizwe will be launching its newly revamped corporate website, aimed at creating a much more engaging and interactive experience for all visitors to the site, particularly for the investment community and the media.
As part of this new approach, dedicated new sections of the website will be aimed specifically at the investment community and the financial media. Special communications portals are being created on the new website, providing a highly effective platform for all interested stakeholders in particular aspects of Wesizwe’s business and activities to access a host of essential news, useful downloads, event notifications and much more relevant information.
Visitors to the new website will be able to download the latest company magazines and newsletters, read the latest news and information about the Bakubung Platinum Mine project, and hear the thoughts of the company's leadership team on issues that are important to both the company and its projects and also to the industry as a whole. The site will be the ideal place to learn about important forthcoming events such as investor forums, site tours, investor roadshows, annual general meetings and others. The site will also feature the latest information on all the social projects being undertaken in the local area to benefit residents and local learners, such as training and educational programmes, schools refurbishment projects, water initiatives, and much more as part of the company’s ongoing commitment to sustainability.
The new website is scheduled for launch at the end of January. Visit www.wesizwe.com
